Growing Strong for Over 150 Years

Rooted in Legacy: The Blooming Heritage of Wild and Son

Since our founding, Wild and Son© has been dedicated to providing plant lovers with some of the world’s finest varieties at excellent prices, as showcased in our most recent catalog. Unlike most mail-order companies, we grow our own plant stock, allowing us to deliver the highest quality product possible.

Our story began over 150 years ago, when James Herman Wild was on a wagon train heading southwest, which broke down in the Southwest Missouri region. Inspired by the beautiful meadows of wildflowers, James settled in Sarcoxie, MO, in 1868. In 1885, his son, Gilbert Herman Wild, purchased a crate of peony roots from Europe for $45.00, which he planted behind the family home. Three years later, the blooms were sold to an Omaha wholesaler for $3.00 each. That single sale launched Wild and Son! As the family farm grew, they added daylilies and iris to their offerings.

We take great pride in growing, digging, and shipping our plants directly to you, building on our centuries-long reputation for excellence. Over time, our growing fields expanded, and word of our exceptional peonies, daylilies, and iris spread far beyond Sarcoxie, Missouri. Garden enthusiasts from across the country began seeking out our expertly grown plants, which had developed a reputation not just for their vibrant blooms, but also for their vigor and longevity. As we continued to refine our cultivation methods, we introduced even more selections—always with the goal of enriching our customers’ gardens with robust, breathtaking flowers.

During our heyday as plant breeders, we became one of the most prolific daylily and peony hybridizers in the world. Our extensive breeding program earned numerous accolades, including the prestigious Stout Silver Medal and many other honors. With over 2,000 registered varieties to our name, we still proudly offer many of those award-winning cultivars today—ensuring that gardeners everywhere can enjoy these time-tested favorites.

Today, Wild and Son© remains true to the values that first inspired James and Gilbert. We dedicate ourselves to preserving heirloom varieties while also embracing innovations in horticulture. Our team carefully tends each planting field, closely monitoring soil conditions, pest management, and the ever-changing Midwest weather to ensure that every root, bulb, and rhizome we ship meets our standards of excellence.

Just as importantly, our business is built on personal service. Whether we’re answering questions about optimal planting times or offering tried-and-true tips for fertilizing daylilies, we want every customer to feel confident and excited about growing with us. We’re here to share our passion and expertise—something that’s remained constant for more than 150 years.

As we look ahead, we’re committed to continuing this legacy: sharing the joy of gardening by providing the healthiest, most beautiful varieties at honest prices. From the fertile fields of Sarcoxie straight to your doorstep, we thank you for choosing Wild and Son© to be a part of your garden story. Your satisfaction is our greatest reward, and we can’t wait to see what you’ll grow next.
